March 4th - 8th 2008, Maribor/Sl
After two successful and excellently organized YPACs in Innsbruck, Maribor, was the hosting city of the third Youth Parliament of the Alpine Convention in March 2008. II. gimnazija Maribor has been chosen for being school of this years YPACs parliament session. In 4 days of discussion, from 4. to 8. March 2008, 50 young delegates from 7 alpine countries (Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein, France and Slovenia) participated in order to organize parliamentary debates in which young representatives of all member states discussed regional Alpine issues, from the points of view of young people, and decided upon Resolutions, which were handed on to the committees of the Alpine Convention and gave recommendations for action.
The main topic of this years discussions was economy versus ecology. Young delegates were trying to find symbiosis between those two notions and try to find most appropriate solutions for this years issue - Should economic growth in Alpine countries be put on top of the priority list even if the environment and cultural heritage are thereby harmed? Main problems that were pointed out were pollution caused by tourism, transportation and tourism, and even applications of alternative energy.
Parliamentary meetings are the basis for the active participation of young people in the development of their Alpine surroundings and environment as well as delivering insight of political processes. Young people should learn to argument their opinion about topics of the Alpine region. It is crucial for young people to take responsibility in the regional and European process of unification.
